GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats won a five-set non-conference match Tuesday night against the Penn State Altoona Lions at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Penn State Altoona and Thiel split the first two sets. The Lions took the first set 28-26 before the Tomcats took the second set, 25-23.
The Lions took a 2-1 advantage after winning the third set, 25-20. The Tomcats answered with a 28-26 win in the fourth game to push the match to a decisive fifth set. Thiel prevailed with an 18-16 win in the fifth set.
Zach Rombach (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Tomcats with a match-best 73 assists and 14 digs.
Mitchell Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) racked up 24 kills while older brother
Cody Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) tallied 18 kills on the night.
Thiel will return to action Friday on the road against Alvernia. The Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
