Reib’s OT goal lifts Tomcats over Panthers in ORLC opener

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Kyle Reib (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored 55 seconds into overtime Saturday to lift the Thiel Tomcats to an 11-10 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) victory over the Hanover Panthers at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.

The Panthers never possessed the ball in the sudden death overtime. Jack Fontana (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted) opened the extra session with a critical faceoff win, Brennen O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) fed the ball to John Smiley (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) behind the cage, and Smiley found Reib, who flashed open in the low slot.

Reib did the rest scoring from the short side on a snap shot that hit the top right side of the net.

The Tomcats improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the ORLC with the win.

Tied up 3-3 late in the second quarter, Shawndel Evans II (New Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) gave the Tomcats a 4-3 lead heading into halftime when he scored an unassisted goal with 37 seconds remaining before the break.

The Tomcats increased their lead to 6-3 early in the third quarter on goals from Jared Saffer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Andrew Casile (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), which were both assisted by O'Shea.

The Panthers refused to give in. They scored three consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to take a brief 10-9 lead.

Evans II scored the equalizer for the Tomcats with 3:48 remaining in regulation on a pass from O'Shea.

O'Shea led the Tomcats with five points on a goal and four assists. Saffer scored three goals while Evans II recorded three points with two goals and an assist. Reib scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime.

Charles Wistner (Buffalo, N.Y./Orchard Park) made 14 saves in 60-plus minutes of work to improve to 6-1 on the season. Noah Dubrava denied 20 shots for the Panthers.

Joseph DeLeo paced the Panthers with seven points (4G, 3A) while Chad Szczublewski tallied five points (4G, 1A).

The Tomcats (6-1, 1-0 ORLC) will play a non-conference game on the road against the Hilbert Hawks on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
