GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats used a 20-point, second-half run Saturday to earn a key Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over the Bethany Bison at Beeghly Gymnasium, 89-83.
The Tomcats trailed the Bison 38-36 after 20 minutes of play but opened the second half on a 20-0 run to cruise to the league victory. The win gave the Tomcats a split in their regular season series with the Bison and moved them into fourth place in the league standings.
With four conference games yet to be played, the win Saturday also put the Tomcats in position to host a quarterfinal round of the PAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament, which will begin Tuesday, Feb. 21.
Tyreik Burton (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) scored 10 of his team-best 27 points during Thiel's 20-0 run. Burton made a pair of three-pointers during the stretch, which lasted 7:35.
LeAndre Jackson (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) also recorded a dunk on a fast break during the run.
Burton made 8-of-18 shots from the floor, drained 5-of-10 from beyond the three-point line and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe. Also for the Tomcats,
Avril Campbell (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) tallied a double-double with 11 points and game-high 11 rebounds while
Clandell Cetoute (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Josh Lumbus (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) also contributed 11 points.
Antonio Rudolph scored a game-high 29 points for the Bison while Calique Jones scored 24 points. Andrew Williams also notched 11 points for Bethany.
Thiel edged Bethany in points in the paint (34-30), points off turnovers (18-12), second chance points (14-4) and bench points (15-6).
The Tomcats (12-7, 8-6) will return to action Wednesday when they host the Washington & Jefferson Presidents at Beeghly Gymnasium. The PAC game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
