GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's volleyball team won a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match over Saint Vincent College in Beeghly Gymnasium on Thursday night.
The Tomcats ended an eight-game losing streak with the win as they took the match 3 sets to 2.
(25-22, 22-25, 25-11, 20-25, 15-9).
The first set was a battle as the Bearcats and Tomcats traded the lead seven times during the set. Thiel tied the game as late as 17-17 but the Bearcats would edge past the Tomcats 25-22. The second set was similar to the first as each team took multiple leads but it was the Tomcats on the winning end taking the set 25-22.
With the game tied a one set apiece, The Tomcats made quick work of the Bearcats in the third set. Thiel jumped out to an 11-3 lead and eventually doubled up Saint Vincent 25-11 to take a two set to one lead.
The fourth provided an opportunity to close the match for the Tomcats but the Bearcats had other ideas taking the first five points of the set. Saint Vincent was able to maintain their lead throughout and collected the fourth set 25-20.
The deciding set proved to be the difference from the last time the Bearcats and Tomcats met in Latrobe, Pa. earlier this season. In the first meeting the Bearcats closed out the Tomcats in the fifth set taking it 15-13. Tonight, Thiel would prevail and even the season series as they would take the set convincingly 15-9.
The Tomcat offense was clicking as
Shelby Friedel (Columbia Station, Ohio/Columbia) collected a season and game-high 25 kills, while
Peyton Allen (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) added double digit kills as well.
