GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College football team lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game to the Carnegie Mellon Tartans Saturday night at Alumni Stadium, 42-10.
After receiving the opening kickoff the Tomcats embarked on a 13-play drive that ended with a 29-yard field goal by
Chris Rosales (Port St. Lucie, Fla./St. Lucie West Centennial).
Rosales' kick was the only score in the first quarter, but the Tartans went on to score 28 points in the second quarter. Rory Hubbard scored two of CMU's touchdowns over the stretch on 1-yard and 5-yard runs. Sam Benger also scored on a 5-yard run while John Prather scored on a 12-yard pass from Alex Cline.
Benger opened scoring in the second half on a 40-yard run with 6:13 remaining in the third quarter. Thiel responded with a 13-play drive that concluded with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by
Charles Debose (Buffalo, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) with three seconds remaining in the third frame.
Tartan Chris Haas closed out scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run with 2:14 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Nick Barca (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led Thiel's offense with 165 yards on 36 carries.
Ronald Brown (Munhall, Pa./University Prep) completed four passes for 32 yards while
Ryan Rowland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) caught four passes for 33 yards.
Cline completed nine passes for 84 yards with a pair of touchdown passes. Benger recorded a game-best 204 yards rushing on 23 carries with a pair of touchdown runs. Prather caught seven passes, one of which was a touchdown reception, for 77 yards.
Dalton DuBrosky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
Jake Elk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the Tomcats on defense with 10 and nine tackles, respectively. Wagner made six tackles and recorded a sack while
William Killian (Chester, S.C./Chester) made four tackles and intercepted a pass.
Kyle Brittain led CMU on defense with 10 tackles and an interception. Sean Graff made nine tackles and forced a fumble while Ethan Anderson recovered two fumbles.
The Tomcats will return to action Saturday when they take on the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets on the road. The PAC game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
