Tomcats put away Wolverines in three

Thiel sweeps Grove City 3-0

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's volleyball team won three sets to none against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Grove City College on Thursday night in Beeghly Gymnasium.

The Tomcats avenged a three sets to none sweep at Grove City when the two played back on Sept. 26th with a sweep of their own taking the match by scores of 25-23, 25-23, 27-25.

Thiel fell behind early as they found themselves in a 7-3 hole early in the first set before going on a six-point run capped off by a block by Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) to make it 9-7 in favor of the Tomcats.

The rest of the set was a back and forth battle as each team traded the lead six times before the Tomcats claimed the set 25-23.

The second set saw more of the same back and forth action as Tomcats were down 14-13 before another six-point run to take a 19-14 advantage. The Wolverines fought back pulling within two but it was not enough as the Tomcats took set two 25-23.

In the third and deciding set, Thiel came out with the momentum dominating the set 7-3 in the early going. Grove City answered with a six-point run of their own taking the lead 9-7. From that point the Wolverines took eight of the next 12 points to take a convincing five-point lead as the game was at 17-12.

Thiel pulled within one point as set was on the line as a kill by Hannah Rossman (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) made it 24-23 in favor of Grove City. The Tomcats took the lead on the next two points as Rebecca Dougherty (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank) recorded a kill and Peyton Allen (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) served up an ace to make it 25-24. Grove City answered to tie the game at 25-25 before Rossman collected the final two points on back to back kills to end the match.

No Tomcat was over double digits in kills on the night as it was an extremely balanced attack as 10 Tomcats recorded at least one kill in the match. Olivia Scott (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) dished out a game-high 31 assists.

Defensively, Megan Sweeny (Freeport, Pa./Freeport Area) collected a game-high 29 digs, as Allen and Rossman added 20 and 17 digs, respectively.

With the win, the Tomcats now stand at 9-13 and 3-8 in the PAC. The sweep is the Tomcats fifth of the season and second against a PAC opponent. Thiel will return to action on Monday as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to face PAC opponent Chatham College at 7:00 p.m.
