GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team opened the 2017 season Sunday with a pair of tough 3-2 losses to the Fontbonne Griffins and the Medaille Mavericks at Beeghly Gymnasium.
The Tomcats fell to the Griffins 16-25, 34-32, 23-25, 25-21, 13-15 and the Mavericks 25-17, 20-25, 26-24, 17-25, 10-15.
Senior outside hitter
Cody Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led Thiel's attack with 35 kills on the day while younger brother
Mitchell Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) tallied 31 kills.
Nate Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) and
Regan Hess (Burlington, Wis./Wetosha Central) also chipped in with 16 and 15 kills, respectively.
Also for the Tomcats,
Zach Rombach (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded 92 assists and 25 digs while
Thad Paunovich (Avonmore, Pa./Kiski Area) notched 20 digs.
The Tomcats will return to action Friday when they take on the New Paltz Hawks on the road. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
