GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's lacrosse team erased a 3-goal halftime deficit Saturday to earn a 12-10 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) win over the defending league champion Transylvania Pioneers at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
Timothy O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led the Tomcats with six goals, four of which were scored in the second half, while also recording one assists to finish with seven points.
Trailing 5-2 at the half,
Timothy O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) cut Transylvania's lead down to one goal early in the third quarter on a pair of unassisted goals, one of which was scored during a man-down situation.
Special teams play was critical for the Tomcats, especially in the second half when they scored four up-goals and one marker in a short-handed situation. In all, the Tomcats scored five goals on seven man-up situations while the Pioneers went 0-for-10 in extra-man chances.
The Tomcats also benefited from strong play by goalkeeper
Charles Wistner (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park), who denied 21 shots in 60 minutes of work to improve to 7-1 on the season.
After Transylvania tied up the game 10-10,
Timothy O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) put the Tomcats up for good on an unassisted goal with 4:49 left in the fourth quarter.
Aaron Parry (Erie, Pa./McDowell) put the icing on the cake to give the Tomcats a 2-goal lead with 78 seconds remaining when he buried a helper from
Sean Loney (Linthicum, Md./North County).
Edward Kargbo (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) scored two goals and recorded two assists for the Tomcats while
Brennen O'Shea (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored two goals and picked up four ground balls. Parry scored a goal and added two assists, and
Alex Casile (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) scored a goal and tallied an assist.
Jared Saffer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) secured seven ground balls while
Anthony Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and
Desmond Stuart (Roanoke, Va./Salem) each recorded four caused turnovers.
Zack Riggs led Transylvania with two goals while Evan Wright scored a goal and added an assist. Cooper Fogle made five saves for the Pioneers.
The Tomcats (7-1, 2-0 ORLC) will travel to Washington, Pa., Saturday to face the Washington & Jefferson Presidents. The ORLC game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
