Thiel handles Westminster to complete season sweep

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team downed the Westminster Titans 9-3 in a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) home contest Wednesday afternoon to complete the season sweep.

Westminster took the early three-run lead in the first inning but Thiel tied it up in the bottom half of the first. Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) scored on a RBI groundout by Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville). Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) followed with a two RBI single to right field to plate Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) and Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).

Thiel then added two runs in the second and third innings. In the second inning, Koller recorded an infield hit to shortstop to score Nick Fowkes (New Eagle, Pa./Ringgold) from third base. A batter later, Smith singled to right field to bring home Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire). Mitchell came home in the third inning on a double by Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/ESIT). Elko plated Patrice on a double of his own later in the third inning.

Thiel added some more runs in the sixth and seventh innings for insurance. Koller scored from third on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. Nick Grice (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) brought Mitchell home on a sacrifice fly to left field in the seventh inning.

Kevin Forrester (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) earned his fifth win on the year in six innings of work. Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) came in relief and pitched three shutout innings.

Elko and Koller each went 3-for-5 while Mitchell drove in two runs and scored twice in the victory.

Thiel (18-6, 7-2 PAC) will face the La Roche Redhawks in a non-conference game tomorrow. First pitch from Pittsburgh will be at 4 p.m.
