LATROBE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team lost a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games on the road Sunday to the Saint Vincent Bearcats. Saint Vincent won the first game 3-1 and the second game 9-7.
In the first game, Saint Vincent built up a 3-0 lead through five innings. The Tomcats eked out a run in the top of the sixth on
Miranda Reesman (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg)'s two-out double to right center field. The Tomcats had a chance to score more runs in the sixth with a pair of runners in scoring position, but Bearcat pitcher Samantha Emert recorded the third out of the inning with a strikeout.
Emert earned the win, her ninth of the season. She allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out three and walking three.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) took the loss. She allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings of work. Williams walked a pair of batters and struck out one batter.
The Tomcats plated three runs in the top of the first inning in the second game. Reesman drove in Thiel's first run on a double to center field and
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton) followed with a 2-RBI single to center field. However, the Bearcats scored seven runs in the bottom of the first frame. After three scoreless innings, Saint Vincent added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Thiel went on to score four runs over the final two innings.
Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) led off the sixth with a home run, and
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) scored thanks to a pair of Saint Vincent errors. In the seventh, the Tomcats loaded the bases with no outs but were only able to score two runs on groundouts by Callahan and
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional).
Auxier went 3-for-4 in the second game with a solo home run. Carney hit two singles and drove in a pair of runs while
Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) notched a pair of singles and scored a run.
The Tomcats (7-11, 1-3 PAC) will host the Chatham Cougars Tuesday at Tomcat Park. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
