WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team continued play in the Spring Games Tuesday, finishing with a 5-4 win over Wesleyan after falling to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) 13-8 earlier in the day.
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton) staked the Tomcats to an early 1-0 lead against the Wesleyan Wolves when she belted an RBI-single to left center field. Thiel picked up a pair of runs in the third on a
Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) double down the left field line and an
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) single up the middle.
Thiel went up 5-0 in the fifth after
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to right field and Corradi singled to left center. The Wolves picked up their first three runs in the game in the bottom of the sixth. Wesleyan also scored a run in the seventh inning, but the Tomcats held on for the win down the stretch.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) earned the win against the Wolves. She went 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits. Williams struck out two and issued two walks. Kelley came in to secure the last out in the seventh inning and earned her first collegiate save in the process.
Corradi went 2-for-3 with two RBIs against the Wolves while Kelley and
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) both notched two hits and scored two runs. Victoria Clower led the Wolves with two hits and two RBIs.
Thiel scored four runs against the WPI Engineers in the top of the first inning. Two of Thiel's runs were scored on
Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge)'s double to right field while Carney and
Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) also recorded one RBI apiece. The Tomcats added two more runs in the second inning on Corradi's double to left center and Carney's single to center.
The Engineers scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and trailed the Tomcats 6-4 after two innings of play. WPI went on to score a run in the third, six runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth while keeping Thiel off the scoreboard to claim a 13-6 lead after five innings.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Thiel added two runs in the seventh on RBI-singles from
Ashley Ames (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and Kelley.
Caroline Medino earned the win for the Engineers. In three innings of relief, she refused to give up a run on three hits. Kelley absorbed the loss. She allowed six earned runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts in four innings of relief work.
Carney and Auxier each recorded three hits and two RBIs against the Engineers.
Thiel (2-2) will continue play in the Spring Games Tuesday against Arcadia (5 p.m.) and Ohio Wesleyan (7 p.m.).
