WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team opened play in the Spring Games Sunday with a 1-1 record. Thiel defeated PSU-Brandywine 13-2 late Sunday night after suffering a 4-2 loss to Ursinus at Foundation Academy in Winter Garden, Fla.
Thiel scored three runs against PSU-Brandywine in the first inning, two of which crossed the plate on freshman
Miranda Reesman (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg)'s triple to right field. Reesman later scored on a wild pitch.
The Tomcats increased their lead to 8-1 in the fifth inning.
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) each recorded an RBI in the fifth. The Tomcats added five more runs in the seventh, two of which came on a
Kaitlyn Staton (Trenton, Ohio/Madison) RBI-single to center field.
Cara Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry) also drove in a run on an RBI-single to right field.
Kelley went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI against PSU-Brandywine while
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch),
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional), Reesman and Corradi each tallied a pair of hits.
Brianna Flynn (Clark, Pa./Sharpsville) earned the win in the second game. She pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on one hit. Flynn struck out five batters and allowed five walks.
Isabella Bungo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) pitched 3 1/3 strong innings of relief. She refused to give up a run while allowing two hits. Bungo struck out three batters and allowed two walks.
Katie DeStefano took the loss for PSU-Brandywine. She struck out five and issued 10 walks. Arianna Segich led the Lions at the plate with two hits.
Against Ursinus, Samantha Garritano gave the Bears an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-double to the left field gap.
The Bears maintained a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth when Reesman knocked in the game-tying run on a double to left field.
Ursinus won the game with a 3-run effort in the top of the seventh. Baker drove in a run on a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tomcats stranded a pair of base runners and the Bears held on for the win.
Callahan went 3-for-3 against the Bears.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) allowed one earned run on four hits through four innings of work. Kelley allowed two earned runs through three innings. She struck out four and allowed three walks.
The Tomcats (1-1) will continue play in the Spring Games Monday at Foundation Academy in Winter Garden, Fla. Thiel will face WPI at 3 p.m. before taking on Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
