GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday against the Medaille Mavericks at Tomcat Park. Thiel won the second game 6-3 after falling 11-3 in the first game.
Thiel scored two runs in the first inning of the second game. After giving up a run in the top of the third inning, the Tomcats responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and two more runs in the fourth.
Miranda Reesman (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) had the key hit in the third, a 2-RBI double to left field, which scored
Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) and
Shyanne Sanders (Herminie, Pa./Yough). In the fourth,
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton)'s single up the middle brought home Kelley and
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional).
Kelley went 4-for-4 in the second game with a double and two runs scored. Carney tallied two hits with two RBIs while Fike recorded a pair of singles.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) picked up the win in the second game, her third of the season. She allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, while giving up seven hits through seven innings.
Morgan Ziemba and Cortney Carroccia each had a pair of hits in the second game for the Mavericks. Carroccia took the loss. In two innings, she allowed four runs, three of which were earned, while giving up six hits.
Thiel held a 3-1 lead over Medaille after three innings in the first game. Kelley led off the bottom of the first with an inside the park home run to tie up the game, 1-1.
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) belted in the go-ahead run in the third when she singled to center field, and Reesman followed with an RBI-single to right field.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Mavericks went on to score six runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to earn an 11-3 win in six innings.
Fike led the Tomcats with two hits in the first game while Kelley hit an inside the park home run and
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) hit a triple. Kelley took the loss. She allowed six runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Lauren Kocher went 4-for-4 in the first game for the Mavericks with three RBIs and a run scored. Amanda Mesi earned the win, her sixth of the season. Mesi allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out four batters.
Thiel (5-7) is scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader on the road against Penn State Beaver on Wednesday. The first game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
