Kelley earns first win in Thiel’s fourth victory in Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – Thiel College freshman pitcher Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) earned her first collegiate win Thursday in a 7-3 victory over the Gordon Scots during play in the Spring Games at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla.

Kelley pitched a complete game three-hitter. She allowed three runs, two of which were earned, while striking out four batters and allowing three walks.

The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Thiel bounced back with a pair of runs in the third inning. Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) drove in one of the Tomcats' runs with a single to left field while Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) drove in the go-ahead run on a single to right field, which scored Callahan.

Thiel went on to score four more runs in the fifth frame. Fullmer, A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and Cara Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry) each knocked RBI-singles in the inning. The Tomcats added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a Cara Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry) single through the right side of the infield.

Gordon scored a pair of runs in the seventh but never threatened as Kelley went on to earn the win.

Baker led the Tomcats at the plate against the Scots with three hits and two RBIs while Callahan also had three hits and drove in a run. Fullmer tallied two hits and pushed two runs across the plate.

In their second game of the day, Thiel suffered an 8-0 loss to the Wittenberg Tigers in five innings. Abby Haab, who improved to 3-0 on the season with the win, limited the Tomcats to one hit. She struck out five and allowed one walk in five innings of work.

Freshman catcher Miranda Reesman (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) led the Tomcats with one hit. Rachel Black and Casey Hobbs led the Tigers with two hits apiece. One of Black's hits was a three-run homer, which cleared the left field fence.

Thiel (4-4) will conclude play in the Spring Games Friday against Millsaps College (9 a.m.) and the Sage Colleges (11 a.m.).
