CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Thiel College baseball team suffered a 7-4 defeat to the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets in the opening game of the 2015 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon.
Thiel got out to an early 4-0 advantage after scoring a pair of runs in the first and two more runs in the third. However, the Yellow Jackets responded with seven unanswered runs, including a three-run seventh inning, which put them ahead for good.
Thiel plated two runs in the top of the first when Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) brought home Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) on an RBI fielder's choice. Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) followed with an RBI-single up the middle that scored Mosley.
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) was responsible for Thiel's other two runs when he hit a two-run home run over the left field fence.
Waynesburg took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI walk by Ben Miller with the bases loaded that scored Jonathan Kletzli. Eric Crum followed with a two-RBI single that gave Waynesburg the lead, 7-4.
Thiel starter Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire), who did not earn a decision, struck out four and allowed three earned runs in six innings.
The Tomcats will play the Thomas More Saints in an elimination game Friday at 1 p.m. Should the Tomcats defeat the Saints Friday, they would play the loser of the winner's bracket game between Waynesburg and Washington & Jefferson Friday at 4 p.m.
