Tomcats split doubleheader against Bearcats

Thiel earns third seed in 2015 PAC Championship Tournament

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a home Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against the Saint Vincent Bearcats Saturday afternoon.

Errors proved costly in the first game as Thiel fell, 4-2. The Tomcats committed five errors in the game.

Saint Vincent scored in the first inning when Ben Webb singled to right field bringing in Aaron Burger. Thiel responded with two runs as Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) brought Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) home on an RBI-triple to right field and Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) followed with a single through the left side that scored Mosley.

Saint Vincent went on to add three more runs, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. John Malone was responsible for the first of those runs when he knocked a sacrifice fly to center field. Brennan Hoffer scored on an error, and Braden Hoffer scored when Chris Winkler hit an RBI-single to right field.

Kevin Forrester (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) was the tough luck loser, striking out six in six innings of work. Forrester allowed three earned runs and only walked one.

Thiel rebounded to earn a 4-2 win in the second game behind a solid outing by Jaden Nozicka (Portage, Mich./Portage Central), who allowed two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings while recording three strikeouts.

Thiel scored all of its runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Smith hit an RBI-single that scored Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and then Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) came home on a throwing error by the Saint Vincent catcher. Brumbaugh belted a single to right center that scored Smith from third. In the fifth, Doody hit a sacrifice to center that scored Trinch from third.
