Spartans best Tomcats

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats lost a pair of non-conference games to the Case Western Reserve Spartans Sunday at Tomcat Park. Thiel lost 9-1 in the first game before falling 15-7 in the second game.

Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton) drove in Thiel's run in the first game on a single to left field, which brought home Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch). Callahan paced the Tomcats at the plate in the first game with a 2-for-2 performance that included a double.

Annie Wennerberg led the Spartans in the first game. She hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and also earned the win. She allowed one earned run on eighth hits and struck out seven batters.

Thiel took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on RBI-singles by Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) and Carney. However, Case Western responded with eight runs in the second inning.

Thiel picked up three more runs in the third. Massengill recorded an RBI-double while Carney knocked an infield single for an RBI. Lyndsay Krut (Koppel, Pa./Beaver Falls) also had an RBI in the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Tomcats cut the lead down to two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI-single to left field by Ashley Ames (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Upper Saint Clair). However, the Spartans came back with five runs in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth.

Ames brought home Thiel's final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to left field.

Massengill went 4-for-4 in the second game with two RBIs and a run scored. Ames went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Molly O'Brien and Grace Tritchler each had four hits for the Spartans in Game 2 while Ashley Parello recorded four RBIs on two hits.

The Tomcats (12-16, 5-9 PAC) will host the Geneva Golden Tornadoes in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Wednesday at Tomcat Park. The first game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
