GREENVILLE, Pa. –
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) delivered in her final doubleheader at Tomcat Park Thursday against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes. The senior pitcher/left fielder became Thiel's career leader in strikeouts (321) in Game 1, leading the Tomcats to a 5-3 win. She followed up with the game-winning hit in the second game, lifting the Tomcats to a 4-3 win in 10 innings.
Callahan tossed a complete game to start off the day. She allowed three runs on six hits while striking out 10 Geneva batters. The 10 strikeouts moved Callahan into first place on the program's career list. She passed up Emily Batiz (2008-11), who amassed 316 career strikeouts.
The strikeout record is the second major milestone Callahan reached after she became the program's career leader in shutouts earlier this season.
Thiel took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game when
Ashley Ames (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) scored on a wild pitch after she reached base on an infield hit. Callahan made it 2-0 in the third when she scored on a passed ball after leading off the inning with an infield single.
Geneva took the lead 3-2 after picking up a run in the fifth and two more runs in the top of the sixth. Thiel responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to capture the win. The Tomcats scored a run on
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton)'s RBI-groundout and two more runs when
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) drilled a two-RBI single up the middle.
Fike led the Tomcats at the plate in the first game with two hits and two RBIs. Ames scored two of Thiel's runs.
Dayna Hicks led Geneva at the plate with two hits and two runs scored. Samantha Johnson suffered the loss. She allowed three earned runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Trailing 3-1 in the second game,
Cara Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) made it a one-run game in the bottom of the sixth when she hit a solo blast over the left field fence. Thiel went on to tie up the game in the seventh when
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) singled to right field to score
Mary Kate Dougherty (Depew, N.Y/Mt. St. Mary Academy) from second base.
The eighth and ninth innings were scoreless before the Tomcats won the game in the bottom of the 10
th.
Cara Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) got the Tomcats going with a leadoff infield single and advanced to third base after two more batters. Callahan followed with a groundout to first base, which allowed Baker to score the winning run.
Baker went 3-for-5 in the second game with two RBIs and two runs scored. She hit a solo homer and scored the game-winning run in the 10
th inning. In all, the Tomcats belted 16 hits in the second game.
Brianna Flynn (Clark, Pa./Sharpsville) earned the win in Game 2. She threw all 10 innings and allowed three runs on 12 hits with seven strikeouts. Johnson absorbed the loss in 3 1/3 innings of relief. She allowed one run on three hits.
The Tomcats (14-16, 7-9 PAC) will close out the regular season Saturday when they travel to Grove City, Pa. to take on the Wolverines in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
