NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. –
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) threw a three-hit shutout Tuesday, leading the Thiel Tomcats to a 7-0 victory over the Westminster Titans in the first game of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. Westminster won the second game of the twin bill, 8-0.
Callahan refused to give up a run in seven innings of work, securing her third shutout of the season and 12
th of her career. She also struck out three batters en route to her seventh win of the season.
Cara Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) led the Tomcats at the dish with a 3-for-4 performance that included three RBIs and three runs scored. Baker hit a three-run homer over the left center fence in the sixth inning to give the Tomcats a commanding 7-0 lead.
The Tomcats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the first game when
Jena Bukovac (White, Pa./Connellsville Area) hit an RBI-single into left field. Thiel struck for three more runs in the fifth behind RBI-singles by
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Milan-Edison),
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and Callahan.
Ashley Ames (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Upper Saint Clair), Cheek, Fike and Bukovac tallied two hits apiece in the first game.
The Titans scored two early runs in the second game and added to their lead with three-run efforts in the third and fifth innings.
Amber Forrest limited the Tomcats to four hits in the five-inning second game. She struck out three and picked up her ninth win of the season.
The Tomcats (12-12, 5-7 PAC) will travel to Washington, Pa. Saturday to face the W&J Presidents in a PAC doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
