CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Thiel College baseball team earned a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader sweep over the 25th-ranked Thomas More Saints Wednesday afternoon.
It took extra innings, but the Tomcats pushed three runs across the plate in the ninth frame of the first game to earn a 3-0 win.
Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) plated two of the runs on a single through the right side that scored Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) and Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire). Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) from third.
Elko recorded his sixth win of the season, striking out six Saints and only allowing four hits in eight innings. Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) shut the Saints down in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season.
The Tomcats won the second game 3-1 behind a complete game from Kevin Forrester (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan).
The Saints struck first in the bottom of the third, but the Tomcats responded with a three-run fourth. Mitchell had an RBI-single through the left side that scored Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin). Mosley followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) home. Finally, Koller picked up a bases-loaded walk that scored Elko.
Forrester only gave up one earned run and struck out two batters for his fourth victory of the season.
The Tomcats (22-7, 12-5 PAC) will go on the road to battle the Allegheny Gators in a non-conference game Thursday at 4 p.m.
