Tomcats, Bison split PAC doubleheader

Amanda Callahan becomes career leader in shutouts

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contests with the Bethany Bison Saturday at Tomcat Park. Thiel won the first game 1-0 but suffered a 13-2 loss in the second game.

Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Milan-Edison) drove in the lone run in the first game on a single through the left side in the fourth inning. Cheek's single scored A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) from third base after Corradi opened the inning with a single to center field.

Corradi and Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) both went 2-for-3 at the plate in Game 1. Jess Kusnierz led Bethany with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.

Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) improved to 6-3 on the season with the win. She threw a complete game shutout, struck out six batters and allowed six hits in seven frames. The shutout was the 11th of Callahan's career, making her the program leader in the category. She surpassed Melissa Mosco, who recorded 10 shutouts from 1999-02. Kelsey Bish took the loss. She allowed one run on seven hits while striking out three batters.

The Bison jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second game. Thiel cut the lead down to a single run in the third when freshman third baseman Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) belted a 2-RBI single into center field. However, Bethany scored 10 runs in the fifth to earn the 13-2 win in five innings.

Ashlee Brill tallied three hits and two RBIs for the Bison in the second game. Kiersten Conwell earned the win. She allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Thiel (11-11, 4-6 PAC) will travel to take on Westminster in a PAC doubleheader Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
