PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats won a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contests on the road Wednesday over the Chatham Cougars. Thiel won the first game of the doubleheader 8-0 and rallied to win the second game 4-2.
Thiel opened up a 3-0 lead in Game 1 when
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) smashed a three-RBI single into left field in the second inning. In the fourth frame,
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) notched an RBI and the Tomcats picked up another run on a Chatham error.
Designated hitter
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton) tallied an RBI-single in the sixth, and the Tomcats scored two more runs in the seventh, one of which came on an RBI-single by
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si).
Carney went 3-for-3 in the first game with an RBI and a run scored.
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Fike and Massengill also had two hits apiece.
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) earned the win in Game 1, improving her season record to 5-2. She refused to give up a run on two hits. She struck out 11 batters, a season-best, and allowed one walk.
The Tomcats fell behind 2-0 early in the second game but surged ahead 3-2 with a three-run sixth inning. Massengill hit an RBI-single in the sixth while
Jena Bukovac (White, Pa./Connellsville Area) tallied an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
The Tomcats also picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Massengill knocked another RBI-single. Massengill went 2-for-4 in the second game with two RBIs and a run scored.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) earned the win in Game 2, improving her season record to 3-1. She allowed two runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
The Tomcats (10-6, 3-1 PAC) will play their home opener Thursday against the Thomas More Saints. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Tomcat Park.
