Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team split a pair of games Monday during play in the Spring Games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Thiel was defeated in its first game Monday 7-2 by the Saint Mary's Belles, but responded with an 11-2 win over the Finlandia Lions in five innings.
Thiel scattered 16 hits against Finlandia, led by
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch), who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si),
Anna Richards (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg South),
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Milan-Edison) and
Jena Bukovac (White, Pa./Connellsville Area) also recorded two hits apiece against Finlandia.
After taking an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, Thiel secured the 5-inning win with three runs in the third, four runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth.
Callahan also earned the win, her second of the season. She allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits while striking out six batters.
Against Saint Mary's, Thiel took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Bukovac ripped a 2-RBI single down the left field line. However, the Belles went on to score seven unanswered runs and handed the Tomcats their first loss of the season.
Ashley Ames (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) led the Tomcats with a pair of hits against the Belles.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) took the loss. She allowed seven runs, only two of which were earned, in seven innings of work.
Thiel (3-1) will continue play in the Spring Games tomorrow against Stockton University (11 a.m.) and Fitchburg State College (3 p.m.).
