WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team split a pair of one-run games Monday on the road against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener for both teams. Thiel won the first game of the doubleheader 5-4 but suffered a 4-3 loss in the second game.
 
Waynesburg took an early 1-0 lead in Game 1, but the Tomcats responded with a run in the third inning and another run in the fifth frame. Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Milan-Edison) knocked in the go-ahead run in the fifth on a single to left field.
 
The Tomcats extended their lead to 5-1 with a three-run effort in the top of the sixth. Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) drove in Thiel's third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field. A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch)'s RBI-double drove in the Tomcats' fifth run of the contest.
 
The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Callahan got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam with a popup and a groundout to preserve the win for the Tomcats.
 
Callahan pitched a complete game, earning her fourth win of the season in the process. She allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits while striking out eight batters.
 
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) led the Tomcats at the plate in the first game with a 3-for-4 performance that included a run scored. Corradi and Cheek both had two hits and one RBI apiece while Ashley Ames (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) tallied two hits.
 
The Tomcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game with a three-run first inning. Corradi and Massengill both notched RBI-singles in the frame.

Massengill's RBI-single in the first inning was her 164^th career hit, making her the program's all-time career leader in the category. Massengill passed up Laura Davin, who amassed 163 hits from 2008-11, as the program's career hits leader.
 
The Tomcats maintained their three-run lead until the Yellow Jackets scored in the fifth inning when Cameron Grimes knocked in a run on an RBI-single.
 
Waynesburg stole the win in the bottom of the seventh inning. After loading up the bases, Emily Sorton came through with a 2-RBI single to tie up the game. The Yellow Jackets went on to earn the win on a pitch in the dirt.
 
Corradi went 3-for-4 in the second game with an RBI and a run scored. Brianna Flynn (Clark, Pa./Sharpsville) absorbed the loss. She allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Flynn struck out seven batters.
 
The Tomcats (8-6, 1-1 PAC) are scheduled to host the Saint Vincent Bearcats Tuesday at Tomcat Park. The first game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
