GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team earned its second Presidents' Athletic Conference win of the season in an 8-1 snow-shortened game against the visiting Grove City Wolverines Friday afternoon.
The Tomcats were backed by solid pitching by junior
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire), who struck out 12 Wolverines in six innings. Elko only gave up an earned run and six hits to record his fourth win of the season.
The Wolverines struck first in the top of the first inning when Matt Waugaman tripled to right field, scoring Drew Landis.
The Tomcats retaliated with five runs in the bottom of the first on the power of four singles to go up 5-1.
The Tomcats scored again in the bottom of the third when
Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina) singled up the middle to score
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire).
Two more runs were added in the bottom of the sixth when
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) scored Passafiume and
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) scored
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) on a fielding error by the center fielder.
Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) and
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) each had two hits while
Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) also recorded two RBIs in the victory.
The Tomcats (12-4, 2-2 PAC) will square off against the Grove City Wolverines again on Monday, March 30 at 2 p.m in a doubleheader at Tomcat Park.
