GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team took down the Grove City Wolverines in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Monday afternoon.
The Tomcats rolled over the Wolverines in the first game of the doubleheader 21-1. Each Tomcat starter had at least one hit in the game. The Tomcats were powered by an eight-run third inning and a seven-run seventh inning.
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) and
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) each recorded three hits in the victory.
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin),
Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville),
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and
Austin Schwanke (Warren, Pa./Warren) each had two hits while Trinch knocked in four runs. Smith and
Luke Basko (Meadville, Pa./Saegertown) drove in three runs.
All of the runs scored in the first game came in support of
Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), who struck out nine Wolverines to pick up his fourth win of the season. Meyers had a perfect game until the bottom of the fifth when he gave up an unearned run on two hits.
The Tomcats had to rally back in the second game after trailing 4-1, to win 5-4 in the late innings.
The Tomcats scored first in the top of the first when
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) doubled to right field to score
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan).
After the Wolverines scored two runs in the third and the fifth innings, the Tomcats responded with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina) hit a two RBI single that scored
Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) and
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire).
The Tomcats tied the game in the seventh with a RBI single to right field by
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) that scored
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City). Then the Tomcats took the lead when
Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) hit a sacrifice fly into right field that plated
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).
Patrick Fitzpatrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) picked up the win in relief of starter
Jaden Nozicka (Portage, Mich./Portage Central). Fitzpatrick struck out two in 1 2/3 innings.
Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) picked up the save in the bottom of the seventh.
The Tomcats (14-4, 4-2 PAC) will be back in action Tuesday, March 31 in a conference doubleheader against the W&J Presidents. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
