GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team was defeated by the visiting Mount Union Purple Raiders 11-9 in a non-conference match-up Wednesday afternoon.
The Tomcats took the lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) brought three of those runs home with his second home run of the season when he bruised a fastball over the left-center field fence.
Mount Union added a run in the top of the third and then Thiel responded with a run in the bottom of the third on an infield single by
Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush).
Mount Union did their damage in the latter parts of the game, scoring 10 runs in the final four innings. Mount Union batted around in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs. Justin Jakubik had the big blow in the inning, hitting a three-run home run.
Thiel tried to climb back in the latter innings, when
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) had a RBI groundout that scored
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) and
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) singled to score
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).
Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) took the loss for the Tomcats after working 5.2 innings, giving up six earned runs.
The Tomcats (11-4) will be back in action Friday, March 25 at 4 p.m. to take on the Grove City Wolverines in a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference contest.
