FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team defeated the Gettysburg College Bullets 11-1 Saturday on the final day of the 2015 Gene Cusic Classic, held in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Tomcats were powered by two home runs. In the sixth inning,
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) got a hold of the first pitch he saw by Bullet reliever Ryan Janiga and sent it over the left field fence for a three-run homer. In the following inning,
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) wrapped a two-run shot around the left field foul pole.
Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) went 4-for-4 on the day with a RBI double.
Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) knocked a triple into left-center field. Doody,
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire),
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan), and
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) each recorded multi-hit games. Doody scored three times while Elko and Genco each scored twice.
All the runs came in support of starting pitcher
Jaden Nozicka (Portage, Mich./Portage Central). Nozicka pitched seven shutout innings, striking out four Bullets and only giving up four hits.
The loss went to Aaron Bezio of Gettysburg, who gave up seven earned runs and 12 hits on the day.
The Tomcats finish 7-1 at the Gene Cusic Classic, the best record in Florida since the 2009 season were they went 6-2.
The Tomcats are scheduled to play next on Thursday, March 19 at 3 p.m. to take on the Hiram College Terriers.
