FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team recorded 14 hits in a 14-1 rout of University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Thursday morning as part of the 2015 Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Tomcats were powered by two six-run innings in the third and the sixth.
Brian Snyder (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin),
Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) and
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) each knocked in two runs, while Trinch and Brumbaugh scored twice.
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) and
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) had the only extra-base hits for the Tomcats, both hitting doubles. Smith's double was an RBI in the first and Doody's double was in the sixth.
Junior
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) pitched seven strong innings giving up only one run on two hits and struck out 10 batters. Elko also only walked one batter.
The loss went to Chris Newman of Pitt-Bradford, who gave up five earned in two-plus innings of work. Scottie Frisina knocked in Pitt-Bradford's only run with an RBI single in the second inning.
The Tomcats (5-1) will be back in action Friday, March 13 at noon as they take on the Keystone College Giants.
