FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team improved to 4-1 at the Gene Cusic Classic Wednesday with a 6-3 victory over Monmouth.
The Tomcats scored a run in the second inning on an RBI-single by
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) in the second inning and another run in the fourth on an RBI-double down the left field line by
Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush).
Mosley and Doody again tallied RBIs in the sixth inning, extending Thiel's lead to 4-0. Doody tallied his third RBI of the game in the eighth inning while
Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) also tallied an RBI to give the Tomcats a 6-0 lead.
Monmouth scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth but couldn't get any closer to Thiel.
Doody and
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) both went 3-for-4 for the Tomcats at the plate while Mosley and
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) both recorded two hits.
Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) earned the win for the Tomcats, his first of the season. He pitched 6 1/3 innings while refusing to give up a run on seven hits. He struck out eight batters and issued one walk.
The Tomcats will return to action in the Gene Cusic Classic Thursday at 9 a.m. against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
