CLERMONT, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team split a pair of games Tuesday during play in the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. Thiel suffered a 3-0 loss to the Stockton Ospreys Tuesday morning but defeated the Fitchburg State Falcons 5-2 in the evening at Hancock Park.
The Tomcats took an early 2-0 lead over the Falcons in the first inning. One run was scored on a passed ball while the other was scored on
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton)'s RBI-single to center field.
After the Falcons tied up the game in the third, the Tomcats reclaimed the lead 4-2 in the fifth on sacrifice flies by Carney and
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si). Thiel added an insurance run in the sixth inning when
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) knocked a bases-loaded RBI-single through the left side.
Corradi and
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) both went 3-for-4 against the Falcons.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) earned the complete game win for the Tomcats to improve to 1-1 on the season. Williams allowed just one earned run and recorded one strikeout
The Tomcats fell to the Stockton Ospreys 3-0 in the first game of the day Tuesday in spite of a gem from pitcher
Brianna Flynn (Clark, Pa./Sharpsville), who threw a 3-hitter with six strikeouts. Flynn fell to 1-1 on the season with the loss after allowing three runs, only two of which were earned.
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) led the Tomcats with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate against the Ospreys.
The Tomcats (4-2) will return to action in the Spring Game Thursday when they face the Cornell Rams (1 p.m.) and Franciscan Barons (3 p.m.) at Hancock Park.
