FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team split two games against the Warriors from Wisconsin Lutheran College as part of the 2015 Gene Cusic Classic.
Errors plagued the Tomcats in game one, as they suffered a 5-3 loss to the Warriors. The Tomcats had eight errors in the game. In the first inning, the Warriors score two runs off of errors by the Tomcats. The Warriors followed in the second inning with three unearned runs scored, as the Tomcats committed four errors in the inning.
The Tomcats tried to rally back in the later innings as they scored two in the fifth and one more in the sixth. In the fifth,
Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) hit a double to the wall in left field that scored
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) and then
Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) hit a double into left that brought Mosley home. In the sixth,
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) hit a single through the left side that scored
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) from third after he hit a double earlier in the inning.
Jaden Nozicka (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) took the loss in the first game, after giving up only four hits in over five innings of work.
Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) had two hits including an RBI double.
The Tomcats then rallied back in the second game with a 11-7 victory over the Warriors, highlighted by a six-run fifth inning.
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) had three hits, including three RBIs and two doubles.
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) had two hits and two RBIs.
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) had a two RBI game with a single in the fourth and a RBI groundout in the fifth.
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) scored two runs and recorded two hits for the Tomcats.
Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) earned the win for the Tomcats pitching just over two innings with three strikeouts in relief of the starter
Kevin Forrester (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan).
The Tomcats (3-1) return to action Wednesday, March 11 at 9 a.m. to take on the Monmouth Fighting Scots.
