ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team split the final day of play at the Golden Flyer Invitational, held at Nazareth College Saturday.
In the first game, the Tomcats fell to the Banana Slugs of UC-Santa Cruz 3-0 (21-25, 15-25, 17-25).
Kody Johnson (South Fork, Pa./Forest Hills) led the Tomcats with seven kills and a service ace.
Dylan Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Elderton) had six kills, two block assists and eight digs.
Michael Whitelock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) blocked six attacks and had four kills.
Zach Rombach (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) passed out 19 assists.
Lake Merchen had 13 kills for the Banana Slugs.
In the last game of the tournament, the Tomcats swept the Hilbert Hawks three sets to none (25-17, 25-17, 27-25). The Tomcat attack was led by
Cody Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), who had eight kills, 12 digs and a service ace.
Thad Paunovich (Avonmore, Pa./Kiski Area) and
Michael Whitelock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) had seven kills respectively while Paunovich added 11 digs, a service ace and a block solo.
Zach Rombach (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had a double-double with 40 assists and 13 digs. Rombach also recorded three service aces.
Korey Schwab had a game-high nine kills for the Hawks.
The Tomcats (5-5) will be back in action Tuesday, February 10 at 7 p.m. when they take on No.1 ranked Juniata College Eagles inside Beeghly Gymnasium.
