UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Thiel College wrestling team picked up three wins to start of the year at the John Carroll Duals on Saturday.
The Tomcats opened the dual tournament with a win over Saint Catharine College 24-17.
Vince Vahaly (Bentleyville, Pa./Bentworth) started the match with a 15-1 major decision over David Hernandez of Saint Catharine at 125 pounds. After dropping the next two matches, the Tomcats rifled off three consecutive wins highlighted by 157 pounder
Jordan Smith (Olean, N.Y./Portville Central) pinning Andy Dobben of Saint Catharine in 2:45.
Marco Crivelli (Clinton, Pa./Hopewell) picked up a 17-1 tech fall victory at 184 pounds over TJ Edwards and Jake Lowry earned a hard-fought 12-11 decision over 2015 NAIA National Qualifier BJ Carman.
The Tomcats picked up four forfeits en route to a 37-6 victory over Mount St. Joseph University.
Nick Burkett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) (141),
Derek Steetle (Polk, Pa./Franklin) (157) and
Dominic Farabaugh (Loretto, Pa./Penn Cambria) (165) recorded decisions over their Mount St. Joseph opponents. Giulano Graziosi earned a 10-2 major decision at 133 pounds over Charlie Heyob.
In the third match of the day, the Tomcats defeated host Blue Streaks of John Carroll University 27-24. The Tomcats earned three forfeits to start the match. At 184 pounds, Crivelli defeated Gabe Susiniski by major decision 10-1. Lowry followed Crivelli's match with a 16-0 tech fall victory at 197 pounds.
The Tomcats lone loss of the day came in their final match against Division II Wheeling Jesuit University. Crivelli earned an 18-3 tech fall victory over Clayton Ray at 174 pounds.
Zeb Throne (Metamora, MI/Oxford) picked up six points at 184 pounds after Nathaniel Starkey was injured in the first period. Lowry recorded a forfeit at 197 pounds.
As a team, the Tomcats finish the dual tournament in second place behind Wheeling Jesuit.
The Tomcats will return home on Wednesday, Nov. 11 to take on the Mount Union Purple Raiders. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
