Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel softball team tallied 32 hits in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader sweep over the Chatham Cougars Saturday at Tomcat Park. The Tomcats won the first game of the doubleheader 20-0 in five innings before winning the second game 9-1 in six innings.
Of Thiel's 32 hits, sophomore shortstop
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison)'s was the most impressive. She hit a grand slam 220 feet over the left field fence during the second inning of Game 1.
The Tomcats scored nine runs in the second inning, four of which came off the bat of Cheek on her grand slam.
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) notched two RBIs in the inning, one of which was on a double down the left field line.
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch),
Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and
Bailey Ahern (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) also recorded one RBI apiece in the second inning.
The Tomcats also scored seven runs in the fourth inning of Game 1, highlighted by Callahan's 2-RBI triple to left field.
Dolan led the Tomcats with three hits in the first game, one of which was a double. She scored three runs and recorded two RBIs. Callahan had two hits, including a triple, to go along with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) and
Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty) also recorded two hits apiece in the first game.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) and
Morgan White (Warren, Ohio/Champion) combined to earn the shutout in Game 1. Williams threw the first three innings and earned the win while allowing just two hits. White also allowed two hits in two frames.
The Tomcats wasted no time taking a big lead in the second game after scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Massengill brought in the first run of the game on an RBI-triple to right center field. Dolan followed with an RBI-double to right field while
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) earned the RBI on Thiel's third run with a single to center field.
Cara Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) and White also recorded RBI-singles in the inning.
Thiel added two more runs in the second inning when Cheek and Everett hit back-to-back doubles. The Tomcats also added a run in the fifth and their ninth and final run of the game in the sixth when
Shyanne Sanders (Herminie, Pa./Yough) hit an RBI-double to left field.
Everett and Baker both went 3-for-3 in the second game. Everett tallied two RBIs with a run scored while Baker notched one RBI. Sanders went 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI.
Callahan earned the win in the second game. It was her fifth win of the season as she improved her record to 5-2. Callahan allowed one earned run on six hits while striking out four and walking one.
The Tomcats (12-8, 5-1 PAC) will be back in action Sunday when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio, to take on Case Western Reserve. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
