Grove City slips by Thiel

Five Tomcats honored during Senior Day

Molly Jo Everett was one of five players honored during Senior Day Saturday at Tomcat Park.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel softball team concluded its 2014 season Saturday with two close Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) losses to the Grove City Wolverines at Tomcat Park. The Wolverines won the first game 6-5 before earning the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the second game.
 
Grove City struck first in Game 1, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Thiel tied it up in the bottom of the second inning when Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison) scored on Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland)'s RBI-single to center field.
 
The Wolverines went back on top in the top of the third thanks to Sarah Morris' 2-run homer, which hit the top yellow section of the left field fence.
 
Thiel scratched out two runs in the bottom of the third to cut Grove City's lead back to one run. Cheek drove in the first of Thiel's two runs in the third when she singled to left field, scoring freshman center fielder Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) from second base. Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge), the next batter, followed with a triple to right field, which allowed Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) to score.
 
The Tomcats tied up the game, 4-4, in the fourth when senior second baseman Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) notched an RBI on a groundout to third base.
 
The two teams traded runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Grove City earned the win in the seventh when Alaina Kunselman recorded a 2-out, 2-RBI single to center field.
 
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si), Everett, Cheek, Auxier and sisters Alana and Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) led the Tomcats in the first game Saturday with two hits apiece. Cheek also scored two runs and recorded one RBI.
 
Erika Aughton earned the win, her fifth of the season, for Grove City in Game 1. She allowed five earned runs on 14 hits. She struck out one and did not allow a walk in seven innings. Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) suffered the loss. She allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts.
 
Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The Tomcats sliced the lead in half in the top of the third when Dolan singled to center field, scoring Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) from second base.
 
The Wolverines went on to reclaim their 2-run lead in the bottom half of the third. Thiel came back, tying up the game 3-3 when Cheek blasted a 2-RBI double to left field in the top of the fifth. Grove City went on to plate three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, however, and held on to win 6-3 in the second game.
 
Massengill, Dolan and Cheek each notched two hits for the Tomcats in the second game.
 
Katie Watts earned the win in the second game. She gave up three earned runs on eight hits through five innings of work with a strikeout and a walk. Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) suffered the loss. She allowed six runs on 10 hits through six innings with one strikeout.
 
The Thiel softball team said farewell to five seniors between games Saturday: Dolan, Everett, Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty), Samantha Sistek (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) and Morgan White (Warren, Ohio/Champion). The Tomcats concluded the season with an overall record of 12-22 and 5-13 in PAC play.
