Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team suffered a pair of non-conference losses Wednesday to the La Roche Lady Redhawks at Tomcat Park. Thiel fell 5-4 in the first game and 11-3 in the second game.
The Lady Redhawks scored two runs in the top of the first inning in the first game. The Tomcats responded with a run in the bottom of the first and another run in the second to tie up the contest, 2-2.
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) brought in Thiel's first run of the day in the first on an RBI-single that scored
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch). Freshman third baseman
Cara Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) had the key hit in the second inning for the Tomcats, an RBI-triple to right field that scored senior right fielder
Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty).
La Roche went on to score three runs in the top of the third to build a 5-2 lead. The Lady Redhawks maintained their 5-2 lead until the Tomcats' final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh,
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) notched back-to-back singles to give the Tomcats a chance to get back in the game. Freshman catcher
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton) then delivered a 2-RBI single to right center field that scored both Callahans to shave La Roche's lead down to one run.
Unfortunately, La Roche pitcher Kaylee Girdwood got the next batter to ground out, ending the Tomcats' late comeback attempt.
Girdwood threw all seven innings, allowing four runs, only three of which were earned, on eight hits. Girdwood struck out five and walked one batter.
Morgan White (Warren, Ohio/Champion) absorbed the loss. She allowed five runs, two of which were earned, on six hits in four innings of work.
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) went 3-for-3 in the first game with a run scored while older sister Amanda went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
In the second game Wednesday, La Roche scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Thiel tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth when senior first baseman
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) singled down the right field line, scoring
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison).
The Lady Redhawks scored three runs in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh inning to take a commanding 11-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh frame. Thiel second baseman
Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) notched a 2-RBI single in the seventh to close out scoring.
Freshman left fielder
Ashley Guillory (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) led the Tomcats at the plate in the second game with a 2-for-3 performance that included a run scored.
Thiel (10-8, 3-1 PAC) will return to action Saturday when they host the Chatham Cougars in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Tomcat Park. The first game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
