Massengill, Auxier homers pace Tomcats against Titans

Danielle Massengill hit a leadoff home run Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader against the Westminster Titans at Tomcat Park.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) and Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) hit their first home runs of the season Wednesday, but they weren't enough for the Thiel Tomcats in a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) losses to the Westminster Titans at Tomcat Park.

Westminster took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning of the first game. Thiel sliced the deficit in half in the bottom half of the third when Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison) knocked a 2-RBI double to left center field.

The Titans went on to score four more unanswered runs over the remainder of the first game to earn the win, 8-2.

Freshman center fielder Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) went 2-for-3 in Game 1 with a run scored while Cheek pushed two runs across the plate with a double to left center field in the third inning.

The Tomcats plated four runs in the first inning of the second game, thanks to homers by Massengill and Auxier. Massengill hit the first pitch she saw in the second game, smashing it over the right center field fence. Auxier followed with a three-run bomb that hit the left support beam of the scoreboard in left field.

Thiel extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI-double by Massengill and an infield RBI by Cheek.

Westminster got back in the game with a 4-run effort in the bottom of the fifth, but Thiel came back with three runs in the top of the sixth. Callahan had the key hit in the top of the sixth, a 2-RBI single through the left side of the infield, while Cheek drove in the third run with a single to left field.

The Titans scored five runs in their last two at-bats, forcing an eighth inning.

After the Tomcats were kept off the scoreboard in the top of the eighth, the Titans scratched out the game-winning run in the bottom of the frame.

Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) led the Tomcats in the second game with three hits. Massengill had two hits, one of which was a solo homer, scored three runs and notched two RBIs. Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and Cheek recorded two hits and two RBIs apiece while Auxier drove in three runs on a 3-run home run to left field in the first inning. Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty) also tallied two hits apiece in the second game.

The Tomcats (12-16, 5-7 PAC) will return to action Friday when they host the W&J Presidents in a PAC doubleheader at Tomcat Park. The first game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
