Tomcats close out play in Dot Richardson Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEOLA, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team concluded play Friday in the Dot Richardson Spring Games by splitting a pair of contests. The Tomcats went 4-4 overall during play in the spring games.
 
The Tomcats began Friday with a 5-4 win over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers before falling 7-3 to the nationally ranked Lebanon Valley Dutchmen.
 
The Engineers took an early 2-0 lead in the first game of the day, but the Tomcats responded with five runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
 
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison) started the comeback with a solo homer in the fourth, her second career round-tripper, to get the Tomcats on the board. Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) had the key hit in the fifth, bringing in two runs on an RBI-single. Cheek also singled in the fifth, bringing in Thiel's fifth and final run of the game.
 
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) earned the win against the Engineers. She allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits through four innings of relief work. Williams, who improved to 3-1 on the season with the victory, struck out one and walked one.
 
Cheek and Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) each tallied two hits in the first game.
 
The Tomcats also found themselves in a 2-0 hole against the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen Friday, but exploded for three runs in the fourth frame to take the lead.
 
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch), Cheek and Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) each recorded an RBI-single in the fourth, driving in Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty), Mary Kate Dougherty (Depew, N.Y/Mt. St. Mary Academy) and Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch).
 
Unfortunately for the Tomcats, the Dutchmen went on to score three unanswered runs over the final two innings to earn the 7-3 victory.
 
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) gave up six earned runs on 12 hits. She struck out two and walked two.
 
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch), Massengill and House each recorded two hits in the loss. Callahan and Massengill each tallied one two-bagger.
 
The Tomcats (4-4) are scheduled to return to play on Saturday, March 15 when they travel to Oberlin, Ohio to take on the Yeowomen.
