Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Thiel College Tomcats split a pair of games Wednesday during their third day of competition in the Dot Richardson Spring Games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
The Tomcats opened the day with a 3-1 loss to the Augustana Vikings, who were ranked 14
th nationally in Division III according the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
The Vikings held a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Tomcats cut the lead in half in the third stanza when
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) singled down the right field line, scoring older sister Amanda.
Augustana went on to add a third run in the fourth inning and kept Thiel off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) allowed three earned runs on eight hits against the nationally ranked Vikings. She struck out five and walked one.
Sarah Hintz earned the win for the Vikings. In seven innings, she allowed one earned run on six hits. She struck out 10 batters and issued one walk. Jenna Teson led Augustana at the plate with two hits, one of which was a 2-bagger.
Thiel rebounded in its second game of the day, defeating Ohio Northern, 4-3.
The Tomcats took an early lead on the ONU Polar Bears in the first inning on a
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison) single that drove in
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si).
Ohio Northern countered with a run in the second and a run in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
Thiel responded with a 3-run fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. With the bases juiced, Cheek recorded an RBI-walk, followed by a sacrifice fly to center field by
Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge). The next batter,
Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty), then singled to center field to bring in Thiel's fourth and final run of the game.
After a scoreless sixth inning, the Polar Bears loaded the bases and picked up one run to cut Thiel's lead down to 4-3. However, pitcher
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) got out of the bases-loaded jam when she got No. 5 hitter Anne Dreher to pop out to Auxier at third base.
Williams improved to 2-1 on the season with the complete game win. She allowed three runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Massengill led the Tomcats at the plate against the Polar Bears with a 2-for-2 performance that included two runs scored and a walk.
The Tomcats (3-3) are scheduled to return to action in the Dot Richardson Spring Games Thursday at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. with contests against Misericordia (3 p.m.) and Marywood (5 p.m.).
