Tomcats plate six first-inning runs in second game to earn doubleheader split against Gators

Third baseman Amanda Auxier hit a bases-clearing triple Thursday, leading the Thiel Tomcats to a 7-3 win over the Allegheny Gators at Tomcat Park.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team scored six first-inning runs Thursday en route to a 7-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against the Allegheny Gators. The win gave the Tomcats a split in the doubleheader after they fell 4-0 in the first game of the day.

The Gators scored two runs in the top half of the first inning in the second game Thursday thanks to a 2-RBI double by Katrina George that scored Hannah Blinn and Shannen Segiel.

The Tomcats responded with six runs in the bottom of the first, chasing the Gators' starting pitcher after throwing a third of an inning. Sophomore third baseman Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) had the key hit for the Tomcats, a bases-clearing triple to center field that brought home Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional), Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) and Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty). Dolan and House also had RBI-singles during the 6-run, 5-hit barrage.

Allegheny sliced Thiel's lead down to 6-3 with a run in the second inning, but the Tomcats got that run back in the sixth inning when Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) to score.

Morgan White (Warren, Ohio/Champion), who was coming off a no-hitter against Houghton College, earned the win. She allowed three runs on 10 hits through five innings of work. Callahan finished up pitching duties in Game 2, allowing just one hit through two scoreless innings to earn her first save of the season.

Massengill went 2-for-2 in the second game with an RBI and a run scored while Callahan went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Auxier led the Tomcats with three RBIs on her first-inning three-bagger.

Allegheny pitcher Caitlin Nealer stole the show in the first game. The junior right-hander threw a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 win. Nealer struck out eight, hit two batters and issued one walk.

The Gators scored a pair of runs in the second inning of the first game on a 2-RBI double to left center field by Halea Hayden and two more runs in the sixth inning on a 2-run homer by George.

Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) absorbed the loss, falling to 3-2 on the season. She allowed four runs on 11 hits while striking out two and walking one.

The Tomcats (7-5) are scheduled to return to action Saturday when they host the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets at Tomcat Park. The first game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
