Simanovsky Delivers Game-Winner as Thiel defeats Kalamazoo, 13-12

Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. -- It took until the last two minutes, but the Thiel College women's lacrosse team kept their three-game win streak alive Wednesday night when they topped the Kalamazoo College Hornets, 13-12. Junior Jenna Simanovsky (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) netted the game-winner on a free position shot with just under two minutes remaining in regulation.

Simanovsky scored two goals in the game as the Tomcats improved to 3-5 on the season, while Kalamazoo falls to 2-3.

Thiel scored the game's first goal, but Kalamazoo answered with three goals of their own to take a 3-1 lead 11:11 into the contest. Neither team was able to earn more than two goals of separation for the rest of the first half, which ended with the Hornets leading, 6-4.

The Tomcats erased the Kalamazoo lead mere minutes into the second half, as juniors Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and Simanovsky scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 6-6 with 26:10 to play. The Hornets answered with a goal of their own two minutes later, but Thiel fired back with Mahdi's fourth and fifth goals of the game to stake claim to an 8-7 advantage.

The Tomcats lead was short lived, however, as Kalamazoo took charge of momentum and scored three unanswered goals in 70 seconds to go ahead 10-8 with 18:53 remaining in regulation. Thiel fired back, as junior Sharr Martin (San Diego, Calif./The Preuss School UCSD) and freshman Samantha Burkhardt (Damascus, Md./Damascus) tallied scores to tie the contest, 10-10, with 16 minutes to play.

The Hornets broke the tie nearly three minutes later when Anika Sproull bounced a low shot past Thiel's goalkeeper to put Kalamazoo up, 11-10, with 13:33 to play.

The Tomcats went back to work, as junior Hannah Stelmach (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Martin tallied markers to put the Tomcats up one, 12-11, with a little over five minutes remaining.

But Kalamazoo's Sproull proved the Hornets were not done yet. She re-tied the game when she whipped a shot past junior goalkeeper Amy Boxer (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) with 4:15 remaining.

After Thiel's Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) was fouled hard by a Hornet defender with just over two minutes to play, Simanovsky converted on the ensuing eight meter attempt to secure the win for Thiel.

Boxer improved to 2-1 in the net for Thiel, making a pair of saves in relief of starter Abby Spriggs (Westminster, Md./Westminster). Spriggs was forced to trade in her helmet for goggles after Mahdi received her second yellow card with just over 20 minutes to play in the contest. Spriggs made four saves in 40 minutes of action between the pipes.

The Tomcats will try to make it four in a row when they travel to Washington, Pa. for a Presidents' Athletic Conference clash with the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents Saturday, March 29 at 2 p.m.
