Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's lacrosse team defeated the previously undefeated Crusaders of Capital University, 10-8, Saturday evening at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) led Thiel (2-5) with her fifth four-plus goal performance of the season, scoring four goals on nine shots.
Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) added three goals while
Jenna Simanovsky (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North), Sharr Martin (San Diego, Calif./The Preuss School UCSD) and Jennifer Rickens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) each tallied a single score.
Abby Spriggs (Westminster, Md./Westminster) made six saves in goal to pick up the win.
Emma Schaefer paced Capital (4-1) with three goals while Shannon Walton and Kim Hoerauf each added a pair of scores. Walton anchored the Crusader defensive effort, scooping up four groundballs in the loss.
Capital scored the game's first two goals to stake claim to a 2-0 lead with 22:48 remaining in the first stanza. The Tomcats answered, as Mahdi and Harrigan tallied unassisted markers to tie the contest, 2-2 with 18:25 to play in the first half.
The Crusaders took their only lead of the match on a goal by Miranda Stellini at the 17:23 mark of the first half. A
Jennifer Rickens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) goal 90 seconds later opened a 5-0 run for Thiel, staking the Tomcats to a 7-3 advantage at the half.
Capital closed the gap with a 3-0 run to start the second half, but back-to-back goals by Martin and Harrigan pushed Thiel's lead back to three (9-6). Capital again trimmed the deficit down to two, taking advantage of a man-up opportunity with a little less than five minutes remaining in regulation to make it 9-7. Mahdi scored some 35 seconds later to seal the win for Thiel.
The Tomcats return to action on Wednesday, March 26 when they host Kalamazoo College. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
