Tomcats explode for 17 goals in first win of season

Harrigan, Mahdi combine for nine goals

Courtney Fatta scored a goal in Thiel’s 17-4 win over Hiram Tuesday.
Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) and Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) combined for nine goals Tuesday, leading the Thiel College women's lacrosse team to its first win of the season, a 17-4 victory over the Hiram Terriers.
 
The Tomcats opened up a 5-0 lead less than 13 minutes into the contest on a pair of goals by Harrigan and Mahdi. Freshman Samantha Burkhardt (Damascus, Md./Damascus) also scored her first collegiate goal during the stretch.
 
Hannah Schaefer cut Thiel's lead down to 5-1 with 16:18 remaining in the first half, but the Tomcats responded with seven straight goals to hold a 12-1 lead at the break.
 
Harrigan led the Tomcats with five goals and two assists while Mahdi scored four goals. Hannah Stelmach (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) notched a hat trick with three goals and also added an assist. Burkhardt scored two goals and tallied one helper for a 3-point game.
 
Also for Thiel, Sharr Martin (San Diego, Calif./The Preuss School UCSD) scored a goal and handed out four assists while Courtney Fatta (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and freshman Jennifer Rickens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) scored one goal apiece. Rickens' goal was the first of her college career.
 
Schaefer and JoLyn Grover paced the Terriers with two goals apiece.
 
Amy Boxer (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) earned the win for the Tomcats. She made one save and allowed just one goal in 30 minutes of work.
 
The Thiel women's lacrosse team (1-5) will return to action Saturday when it hosts Capital University at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
