Mahdi has big night against Saint Vincent

Junior scores a team-high five points in Thiel’s 16-7 loss to Saint Vincent

Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's lacrosse team got four goals from junior standout Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough, as the Saint Vincent College Bearcats defeated the Tomcats by a 16-7 final.

Sophomore Beth Snider (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) opened the game's scoring after 35 seconds of action to give Thiel an early edge. The home team's lead was short-lived, however, as the Bearcats scored four straight goals in a span of 11 minutes to take a 4-1 lead. Thiel fired back, as Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) scored with 16:53 remaining in the first half to cut into Saint Vincent's lead.

Trailing by just two goals (4-2) with under 17 minutes remaining in the first half, Thiel was out-scored 8-1 down the stretch of the period to fall behind 12-3 before going into the locker room at halftime. Saint Vincent kept the momentum going in the second period and scored the first two post-break goals to go ahead 14-3.

Mahdi and Harrigan did what they could to keep the Tomcats' hopes for victory alive with an unanswered goal each to trim the deficit to 14-5 with 19:07 left to play. Unfortunately, SVC was able to control the clock and minimize Thiel's offense by holding the ball to secure the win. Mahdi posted two more goals to close out the scoring.

Mahdi led Thiel with a team-best five points, while Harrigan tacked on the two goals and Snider finished with a goal and an assist. Junior Abby Spriggs (Westminster, Md./Westminster) started and made four saves in net.

Thiel returns to action on Saturday, March 15, when the Tomcats travel to Kenyon College. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
