Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference extra-innings games Monday against Grove City at Tomcat Park. Thiel suffered a nine-inning 7-5 loss in the first game of the doubleheader, but rebounded with an 11-inning 9-8 win in the second game.
In the first game, the Tomcats took a 1-0 lead in third inning when
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si)'s RBI-triple to right center field scored
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison) from second base. A freshman, Cheek opened the inning with a leadoff double to left center field.
Grove City took the lead 2-1 in the top of the fourth and extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth.
The Tomcats responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to knot the score at 4-4. Massengill highlighted the inning with a 2-run double to left field.
The game remained tied, 4-4, until Grove City went ahead 7-4 in the top of the ninth frame. The Tomcats scratched out one run in the bottom of the ninth, but fell to the Wolverines, 7-5.
Massengill went 3-for-4 in the first game with three RBIs and a run scored. In addition, outfielders
June Longbine (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore Central) and
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) both went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Casey Woodcock and Kelsey Shirey led the Wolverines with three hits apiece in Game 1. Woodcock notched two RBIs while Shirey scored two runs and recorded one RBI.
Lauren Clarke earned the win. She pitched all nine innings and allowed four earned runs on nine hits. She struck out four and allowed two free passes.
Morgan White (Warren, Ohio/Champion) pitched the first four innings for the Tomcats. She allowed two earned runs on five hit.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) pitched the final five innings. She allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader the Tomcats found themselves down 3-0 after two innings.
Thiel took the lead, 5-3, with a five-run fourth inning. Callahan highlighted the inning with a bases-clearing triple to left center field. Callahan scored moments later when Massengill, the next batter, also tripled. Massengill went on to score the Tomcats' fifth run of the inning when
Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) singled up the middle.
Grove City cut Thiel's lead down to 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Thiel scored two runs in the top of the fifth frame to extend its lead to 7-4. Cheek and
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) notched RBI-singles for the Tomcats in the fifth.
Grove City went on to score one run apiece in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to force a 7-7 tie.
The Tomcats broke the tie in the top of the 11
th inning with a 2-run effort.
Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) knocked in the go-ahead run with a single down the left field line that scored Massengill from third base. Dolan went on to score the eventual game-winning run later in the top of the 11
th on an error.
The Wolverines cut Thiel's lead down to 9-8 in the bottom of the 11
th but could not manufacture another run to force a 12
th inning.
Callahan earned the win, her fourth of the season. She allowed seven earned runs on 15 hits in a gutsy 11-inning effort. Faith Jentsch suffered the loss. She threw all 11 innings, allowing eight earned runs on 15 hits.
Massengill went 4-for-6 in the second game with two runs scored and an RBI while Callahan went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and one run scored. Cheek, Everett and
Ang Masters (Arnold, Pa./Valley) all recorded two hits for the Tomcats in the 9-8 victory.
Shirey led the Wolverines in the second game with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI.
The Tomcats (7-13, 2-4 PAC) are scheduled to return to action Thursday when they travel to New Wilmington, Pa. to face Westminster College in a PAC doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
