GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Thiel College men's tennis team won its school-record ninth match of the 2013 season, defeating Washington and Jefferson College 7-2 Saturday.
The previous record for most wins in a season was held by the 1998-99 Tomcats, who defeated Carlow University on October 6, 1998 for its eighth, and final win of the season.
Thiel took two of three doubles flights and five of six singles to secure the win. In doubles action, sophomores
Richard Parks (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) and
Collin McAndrew (Dayton, Ohio/General McLane) picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles while freshmen Logan Sturgeon and Trevor Fancher were 8-6 winners at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Parks was a 6-0, 1-0 winner at No. 1 singles with McAndrew winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Sturgeon then picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, as the Tomcats clinched the match with his win for their school-record ninth victory of the season.
“Its pretty amazing that we're having this type of success in just the program's second year back. This shows the character and hard work that we've been putting into this season regardless of the obstacles we've faced. This team has more heart than any team I've played on or coached,” said Thiel coach Tim Dunford.
Shun Kogai (Tokyo, Japan/) and
Yosief Woldegebriel (Hartsville, Pa./William Tennent) were also winners in singles play for Thiel, with Kogai winning in two sets, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Woldegebriel winning a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles.
Thiel is back in action this Monday when it hosts Mount Aloysius College at 4 p.m. The match marks the final home-game of the season for Thiel, and will act as senior day for seniors
