Box Score LATROBE, PA – The Thiel College men's lacrosse team suffered a 16-7 loss to the Bearcats of Saint Vincent Saturday.
Zack Clark, Cobin Cole, and Jay Lunz each scored two goals for the visiting Bearcats as St. Vincent took a 7-3 lead into the half.
A 6-0 run to start the second half proved to be enough for St. Vincent, as a subsequent 4-0 run by Thiel could only cut the deficit down to six. A 3-0 run in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter by the Bearcats pushed the St. Vincent lead back to nine, 16-7, to close out the scoring in the contest.
Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central) scored two goals for Thiel in the second quarter of the contest less than two minutes apart on passes from
Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) and
Zachary Macurak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park).
Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) also scored a goal in the first half of the game.
Papa led the Tomcats with three goals while
Alex Casile (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) chipped in two scores.
Thomas Petrullo (Wantagh, N.Y./General Douglas MacArthur) also added a goal and assist to the totals.
Ryan Weldon (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) and
Richard Cannon (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) combined to make 25 saves in the cage for the Tomcats. A group effort of Adam Gunter, Greg Gonzalez and Logan Hoffman made five saves for the Bearcats.
The Tomcats finish their season with a record of seven wins and six losses. The seven wins are the most wins in the team's young history and the first time the Tomcats finish with a winning record.
Thiel now awaits word on where it will play as part of the first Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship tournament; a four-team affair in which the higher seed in each semifinal match-up will serve as host.
