Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) hit two solo home runs and
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison) hit a 2-run bomb, but it wasn't enough for the Thiel Tomcats who suffered a 7-6 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to the Washington & Jefferson Presidents in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday at Brooks Park in Washington, Pa. The win gave the Presidents a 2-game sweep over the Tomcats after winning the first game in eight innings, 5-4.
Massengill gave the Tomcats a 2-0 lead after three innings of play with leadoff home runs in the first and third innings. Massengill batted from the right side of the plate in Game 2 after hitting from the left side in the first game. She also hit a solo home run in the first game of the doubleheader.
W&J cut Thiel's lead in half, 2-1, in the fifth inning on Stephanie Zur's RBI-double to left field. The Tomcats got that run back in their half of the fifth inning and added another run when Cheek hit a 2-run bomb over the left field fence.
The Tomcats held a 4-1 lead after five innings, but the Presidents pushed six runs across the plate in the sixth inning to take a 7-4 advantage. D.J. Ufolla got the inning going for W&J with a 2-RBI single to right field. Breanna Gleason followed with a run-scoring single to right center, and Kelsey Cunningham did the most damage with a 3-run homer over the center field fence.
Reliever Kristi McCartney retired the Tomcats in order in the sixth. In the seventh, Massengill scored on a sacrifice fly by Cheek and
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) made it a 1-run game on an RBI-single to center field, but the Tomcats couldn't come up with one more key hit to force a tie.
Massengill went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Two of her hits were leadoff solo homers. Cheek went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. She hit a 2-run homer in the fifth inning.
Ang Masters (Arnold, Pa./Valley) and Everett also collected two hits in the loss.
Gleason went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Presidents. Cunningham went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. She hit a 3-run homer in the sixth inning.
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) took the loss. She allowed six earned runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and three walks. McCartney picked up the win in 2 2/3 innings of relief. She gave up two runs on two hits, struck out one and walked two.
The Tomcats will wrap up their season Saturday when they host the Thomas More Saints at Tomcat Park. The first pitch of the PAC doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
