Tomcats drop an eight-inning heartbreaker to Presidents in Game 1 of doubleheader

Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team lost a 5-4 eight-inning heartbreaker in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday against Washington & Jefferson College on Emily Watson's walkoff solo homer in the eighth inning.
 
The Tomcats took a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat of the afternoon on RBI-singles by Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland), but the Presidents cut the lead in half in their first at-bat.
 
W&J tied up the game, 2-2, in the fourth inning on an RBI-single to center field by Susan Lessman, but the Tomcats got the lead back in the top of the fifth when Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) cranked a solo homer over the right center field fence.
 
The Presidents pushed ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-triple by Stephanie Zur and an RBI-single by Sadie Marak. After a scoreless sixth stanza, the Tomcats forced an extra inning when Dolan scored Massengill from second base on an infield single.
 
The Tomcats were retired in order in the top of the eighth, and the Presidents earned the 5-4 victory when Watson led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo blast over the right field fence.
 
Dolan went 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Massengill went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. She hit a solo homer in the fifth inning. Watson led the Presidents at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance. She hit the game-winning homer in the eighth inning and also hit a double. Zur and Kelsey Cunningham also recorded two hits for the Presidents.
 
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) suffered the loss in eight innings of work. She allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on 11 hits. The Tomcats committed three errors in the game. Krista McCartney earned the win. She pitched all eight innings allowing four runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits. McCartney struck out five batters.
